[ While the mini ice queen's hologram has certainly been informative (if not confusing, because what the fuck kind of stupid situation is this), after a minute or two of scanning through some older posts on the network everything else becomes irrelevant.
Because Ozpin is alive, and that's priority one.
But Cinder's apparently out and about here, too, so just making a post saying "oh hello I am here as well and how DO you all do today" seems like a bad idea. Better to keep himself in the shadows while he can, give them a leg up on the enemy. Still, he NEEDS to talk to Ozpin ASAP, so the old fart will end up receiving this very short text: ]
[ there's about a five minute pause, because ozpin is dozing at glynda's apartment again -- but finally, he bothers himself enough to check his phone, and once he reads the text message, he immediately gets to his feet.
finally.
-- he almost considers texting back a snappish you can fly, limp yourself over here, but considering what glynda and james told him (qrow is out looking for you), ozpin immediately decides to be. you know. kind. ]
On my way.
[ ozpin is under strict orders from glynda, probably to rest and to not act like an idiot, but qrow did say as soon as possible, and so he activates his semblance and arrives in about thirty seconds.
it took a bit longer, from ozpin's perspective, but qrow only has a moment or two to wait before ozpin apparently appears out of nowhere, tapping his cane against the ground once to get his attention, with a faint smile. ]
You are late.
[ but his tone is warm.
now, officially, ozpin feels that the odds are on his side. ]
[ It's more or less how he expected Ozpin would arrive, so he doesn't show any visible surprise at his arrival. There is, however, a noticeable delay before he actually responds, taking a moment to look the man over once, stepping closer to rest a hand on his shoulder.
He's here. He's fine. Somehow.
Thank god.
Then he rolls his eyes, letting out a "pffffft!" that blows an unhealthy dose of whiskey breath in the headmaster's face. ]
You know what they say about searching for something - it's always in the last place you look.
[ ah, well. good to know things never change. like qrow being a literal alcoholic. still, the brief moment of relief isn't lost on ozpin, though he musters his best exasperated look at qrow's dismissal. ]
You --
[ and ozpin gently prods qrow's leg with his cane before resting his weight on it again, surveying qrow with arched eyebrows ]
-- should not be looking for me at all, my friend. Surely you have better things to be doing, given the state of Vale.
[ but qrow hardly listens to him, let alone anyone else, and surely glynda and james did not argue. sigh. ]
[ it takes all of ozpin's self-control to not laugh, and so he purses his lips together tightly at the mini-schnee, professionally clearing his throat. ]
What Weiss says is true. We are in a new place, brought here by forces outside of our control. Many of my students are already here, including your nieces.
[ ruby and yang, who both need the support, will surely be thrilled to see him. ]
Glynda and James are here, too. All of us seem to be on relatively the same page, in terms of what happened at home. For the most part.
[ ozpin, as per usual, has his secrets, but qrow is the one person who won't utterly freak out at being told who ozpin thinks has him under lock and key. so he may be more lenient with information. but only just. ]
It's fine for now. I've just been.. discussing some things with some people I know and trust from Fayren. Did you meet with Mewtwo and.. I assume Satori if she isn't just letting him do all the work for her?
After discussing some things with some members of Fairy Tail- a well-established Guild that's been operating as protectors of Fayren since before I got here- apparently Fayren's current Guardianship has been refusing to allow anyone within their walls to help protect citizens unless they answer directly to them. I also learned that it wasn't in my head that they both look down on humans. I didn't want to say anything before for obvious reasons. [ The Schnee girl crying discrimination. She knows how that sounds. But now that she found out it wasn't just her.. ] Apparently I'm not the only one they condescend to. Mewtwo had a history of hating humans but I thought he was moving on from it. Apparently it's mellowed out into a tolerant superiority and Satori isn't any better, but it's being felt by individuals besides myself. Add in their refusal to participate in a council of sorts to help unite the Guardians...
[ She has to figure out to phrase this, since she's sure Ozpin doesn't want her talking about Cinder to others. ]
And that they essentially dismissed Cinder as something they could take care of with ease and insulted anyone who thinks otherwise without even asking what she was capable of when we were discussing threat-assessment, I wouldn't trust them. If they actually care to know what the truth is, they don't seem to be showing it as anything other than a power play.
[ there's a silence, as he listens patiently -- quietly mulling over the possibilities in his head. playing politics with something so dangerous leaves a bad taste in his mouth; condemning a group of people simple for what they are makes it worse. and ozpin has a great amount of sympathy, for the faunus in their world -- understanding, why faunus don't trust humans. but division does nothing but bring about pain.
after a moment, weiss receives an attachment: here. ]
I did not have the most productive conversation with Mewtwo myself. It seems those in charge of Fayren are politically motivated to separate themselves from the rest, which is their decision, and they must suffer both the benefits and consequences of such actions as they see fit.
[ he pauses ]
I may not wield power here, but I am not going to be instructed on how to handle my own mistakes by individuals who know nothing about our universe, or what has happened, save for vague stories in the dark. I trust your intuition, Weiss, and I believe it to be correct -- trusting these individuals is a mistake. General Ironwood and I will not be meeting with them in person, if at all, especially if they have no intention of taking what we have to say at face value, as it appears to be the case.
Do you have a transcript, of the conversation you had with this Satori? I would like to see it. If you are not comfortable with that, I understand -- but reading between the lines of what this individual says would prove useful, in the future.
[ There is obvious hesitation when he asks for the transcript. Mostly because its context is something she had tried to keep secret from Ozpin. ]
I can send it to you at a later date after some of the information being discussed is no longer considered classified.
[ She had trust issues with Ozpin when it came to him hiding information that could get them all killed, but in this case it's because she was certain he would attempt to put an end to the plan regardless of what it was simply because Cinder was the obvious target of it. ]
Remember when you told me to leave Emerald alone? I just made an incredibly stupid suggestion and it actually seems to have come to an accord. Only not... with Emerald. I may need your assistance in figuring out how to discuss this with the rest of the people from our world.
Also potentially a place to stay for a night while I figure out where to say if the house collectively decides to throw me out for this.
[ . . . well. that certainly isn't what he expected first thing in the morning.
what on earth did weiss do. ]
What happened?
[ how much damage control does he need to do with the squad, is really what he wants to ask, but you know. kids. they do dumb things sometimes. whatever. ]
I sealed Mercury's record provided he doesn't commit further crimes.
This makes him a citizen under protection of the laws of Nova City so long as he doesn't murder anyone, basically, even though he had a murder charge while in this world. I was trying to think outside of thr box to prevent more bloodshed. I doubt it's more than a temporary stay at my expense but it gives us time to find other preventative measures.
it actually isn't a bad idea, in theory. offering clemency in the promise of keeping mercury on a leash, and giving him the opportunity to succeed here -- it's what ozpin would have done. but it also provides mercury with a reason to be subversive, and more careful in how he commits his cruel acts.
but really, there is no right answer. and ozpin is far too accustomed to being faced with no right answer, and having to pick the best option out of two terrible ones. ]
Sometimes, there is no right answer. You did what you felt was best, for both yourself and for the city. Whatever consequences or successes that result from this, you will not have to face them alone.
Torchwick said he was willing to negotiate if I had something worth trading and back then I hadn't understood what he'd meant and I didn't particularly want to listen to anything that monster said whether it made sense or not. When Mercury said people were going to die if they went after him, I knew they would regardless. It was either wait until people got hurt or try something.
Of course I'm not alright. Even without what happened at Beacon I wouldn't be alright.
You did what you could, and trying something is better than not trying anything at all. You did the right thing, with what tools you had available. You pushed past your personal feelings and made a sound decision, grounded in what you believed was right.
I am not upset with you. On the contrary, I am rather proud.
But please, take a deep breath.
[ he can almost envision weiss saying all of this in person, at a mile a minute, with much gesturing and irritation. and maybe a little defensiveness. ]
Would you like to come to my apartment, and talk about what to tell the others? There is also a spare room available, should you require it.
Ozpin, I believe I have waited long enough for a response regarding the state of affairs in Remnant. I have done my own research on the substance called "Dust," and have become increasingly reluctant to have it simply shipped out without any kind of oversight given what has been said about you and your compatriots.
[OOC: Lemme know if you had something else you had planned and/or would rather do. I'm just kind of excited to get this going. :3]
he lets the message settle for a moment or two, plotting out what he wants to say in his head. but soon enough, a response is sent, and ozpin looks unruffled -- a smile in place, but firm. ]
Hello, Mewtwo.
[ cordially, enough ]
I apologize for the delay; it has taken longer than anticipated, and numerous other difficulties have come to my attention since our last conversation. I trust you do not take my length of time deliberating over the issue as a sign of disrespect, as it is much the opposite.
[ he pauses ]
However, I must say that I still have the same concerns and hesitations I divulged with you during our last conversation. I do not feel comfortable meeting with you, or Satori, in person. Leveraging Dust -- a substance that is extraordinarily important to both myself and my students -- in order to coax an affirmative decision out of me is also a motivating factor in my lack of trust regarding the governance of Fayren. I would also like to note that any decision that I have made should not reflect upon General Ironwood, nor the rest of my colleagues; it is my decision, and mine alone.
I am, however, willing to answer whatever questions you have concerning the state of my world. Much of what Emerald says is not true -- and what is true is grossly exaggerated, to suit her narrative. But even then, I confess that I am not going to go into gross detail concerning the private matters of my students, nor will I answer questions of a sensitive nature concerning the past, present, or future of my colleagues that they may not want strangers to know. As a fellow leader responsible for a large amount of people, surely you can understand my own position, and my need to keep myself safe in a situation where the spread of information haphazardly could severely harm my students. I will not put them in danger to appease other concerns, however selfish that may be.
[ ozpin tilts his head slightly, his fingers steepled ]
Should you still wish to cut off the supply of Dust from myself and my people due to the story of a child who has been brainwashed by a psychopath and has befriended a known murderer, I am afraid we have nothing else to discuss. But I trust you will listen to reason, and speak with me this way. Perhaps we can come to a mutual understanding of our situations.
[There is an audible growl, much different from the perfectly maintained voice the devices produced for him. One born of frustration than anything else, and a dangerous glare flashes through his eyes, but in an instant it is gone, and one deep breath later, he composes his thoughts.]
It is precisely because I am at least in part responsible for the safety of thousands that the issue of Dust has become a concern. Dust is, to put it mildly, exceptionally dangerous in the wrong hands. The destructive potential rivals anything in my world, and to simply hand that out to anyone with money is simply irresponsible.
As to your delay, I do not take that as disrespect, however I suspect you have asked about the nature of my history here. I will not deny that upon arrival, I was less than cordial to those within this place. I would hazard a guess that you have likely heard that I do not much care for humans. I do not deny that.
However, by refusing to meet in person you tell me two things. First is that you have something to hide, second that you misunderstand or simply do not believe what you have been told about Satori's powers. Regardless, I will not speak of something of this nature through a screen. The last time I was "trusted to listen to reason" I was shackled by a man who sought only to use me.
However, I suppose my first mistake was coming to you at all. Unlike you, I am responsible for the lives of those in Fayren, and despite what you may have been told, I have been doing everything within my power to fulfill that duty and thus maintain the symbiotic relationship between humans and Pokemon that has developed within Fayren. Perhaps I should give the one from your world who actually holds sway here a visit.
And do you have proof, Mewtwo, that Dust is being handed out to anyone with money? Or that it has caused anyone harm?
[ ozpin's tone is suddenly sharp, dismissing the rest of what mewtwo has said for now, focused ]
Dust is utilized in my universe in order to fight the Grimm, and for our technology. It isn't something that can be tossed about without practice, and proper management. Huntsmen and huntresses utilize it for our gifts, and weaponry, in order to defend ourselve and the people. To anyone else, it is practically useless.
[ is it volatile, of course. it is dangerous in large doses, over long periods of time. naturally. what isn't? but ozpin -- while he has made many mistakes, and has caused something of a mess in his world -- will not have remnant painted as some world of despots who toss about a volatile substance without care or practice. he, and his students, are better than that. ]
There are those present within this world, both from Remnant and not, that pose a great threat. We require Dust to combat them properly, and trust me when I say that you cannot defeat what remains in this city alone. You may be responsible for the lives within Fayren, but I am responsible for the lives of those from Remnant, and I will not stand by and allow you to jump to a rash conclusion based on my own feelings of misgiving regarding how you are both handling this situation, and your particular gifts. I said I was willing to tell you the truth, but not in person; clearly, my own research regarding your activities here has put me on guard. You are the one refusing my side of the story, when no one else has.
[ he pauses ]
I am not a suspect to be interrogated; neither is General Ironwood, or any of my friends, or students. Should you want to work together on this specific issue, I am willing to do so. But the other Guardians have not held a proverbial gun to my head in order to get the other half of the truth; why do you?
And yet this is the first time anyone from your world has said anything regarding the purpose or power of the substance to anyone in charge of keeping the cities safe. Almost as if there was something to hide.
[Mewtwo was growing more and more agitated, requiring longer pauses to keep himself calm. After all, it wouldn't do to fly into a rage and have to replace his device. The Venusaur napping behind Mewtwo even opened one eye, shook the massive flower on its back, causing a pink dust to fill the air in an attempt to soothe his friend, but with the flick of a misshapen finger, the dust was wiped from the air. The Venusaur gives an annoyed grunt before standing and lumbering out of view.]
Because neither Satori nor myself have the luxury of simply taking a human on good faith. We have only survived this long by distrusting those who hide behind screens. If that is all you have to say, however, I am done speaking to you. If you truly had nothing to hide, you would have agreed to our terms, but as it stands, you have only made yourself more suspicious than anyone from your world.
