[ Weiss slips, but she has good reflexes. She catches herself with both her hands before falling, somersaulting backwards a few feet away. The Glyph that she had previously summoned disappears like glitter, becoming one with the air, but another one takes its place in front of Weiss the very second she's standing again.
The Glyph multiplies. At first there was just one in front of her, but now there's two, then four, then six. They all light up at the same time — light blue, the colour of Ice Dust. Once everything is set up, icicles come out of the Glyphs, as if they're portals to some unknown dimension that's so cold.
Ozpin is a formidable opponent. Weiss already knows that, even before coming here. If she can't hit him with her melee weapon, then she'd better maintain some distance between them.
She keeps in mind what she just heard, though. A barrage of icicles may be shooting directly at Ozpin, but she's certain that these won't hit the man. At the very least, she can watch closely how he moves and reacts to every bit of ice that comes his way. ]
[ ah. this, again (though ice is preferable over glass thrown at him by a psychopath).
immediately, ozpin pushes himself backwards with a burst of energy to give himself room -- and if weiss is paying attention, she'll notice he shifts his weight to his right leg, to compensate for his left, as he's quickly repurposing his aura to take a firm stand. and once he's back on his feet again, he spins his cane in front of him, lightning fast, to strike down the icicles one by one, sending a spray of crystals settling around him. it's nearly impossible to see how fast he's moving -- or, at least, how fast it appears to weiss -- but ozpin comes back into vision with a crack of his cane against the last icicle, snapping it in half to send the sharp edge of it sinking into the ground to his right.
it's hard to really tell what, exactly, ozpin is favoring or not favoring. he moves with the practice of someone who has had quite a lot of time to hone his skill, and for all of his preaching of peace and prosperity, he shows no hesitation in melting directly into combat.
but a few things can be noticed by a well-studied student.
(1) ozpin is definitely using his aura to focus his energy on the leg that he typically favors when he isn't in combat; (2) ozpin is either (a) ridiculously fast utilizing his semblance or (b) using some sort of time dilation to slow down weiss' attacks in order to strike so apparently quickly; and (3) he is still definitely feeling weiss out, as he has not yet properly attacked.
until now, anyway.
with a sudden burst of energy, ozpin darts forward, spinning his cane quickly to reach over his head, to slam it down against weiss' sword -- but with his left hand, he swings forward for a fairly solid punch toward her side, in the hopes to knock her backward, to give him more room to work. ]
[ Weiss manages to notice two things, namely where Ozpin is focusing his Aura on, and what his Semlance might be. It's not the same as Ruby's, where the girl can move in extraordinary speeds, but Ozpin is quick as lightning, maybe even more so.
She's not convinced, though. There has to be something more than that. He can't be the headmaster of a once prestigious academy if his Semblance is merely being able to move fast.
When Ozpin strikes, she moves in response. A few steps back, and she raises her sword to meet Ozpin's weapon. The ground below her shakes and moves, and she sinks a little lower into it. And the little physical strength Weiss has is concentrated on her arm so she can parry his weapon, which means the punch connects and sends her not just backwards, but flying a few feet away. ]
[ ozpin lands neatly on his feet, after the punch connects, spinning his cane quickly between his fingers to settle itself into the palm of his hand again -- and he takes a quick breath, to himself, exhaling slowly. he, by now, is healed, but he also hasn't really done much of anything, since arriving in verens, which was likely a mistake.
there is half a moment of pause -- a split second, really, as ozpin decides his next move. allow weiss the opportunity to find her footing and strike back, or take this seriously, as if she were a proper enemy? if she were an enemy, ozpin would immediately be on her heels, to take advantage of the blow . . . but this is a teaching moment, for her, and weiss had asked ozpin a very specific question to solve.
how to conserve aura.
so, ozpin decides, a teaching moment it is, and he raises his cane again, speaking loudly enough so weiss can hear him: ]
Good. Distract, and observe, and now -- dissect your opponent!
[ it isn't harsh or insulting, but commanding, an unusually comforting tone for being barked across the park. and ozpin flips his cane, end over end, to catch it -- not wielding it like a sword, but gripping it, pointed toward the ground. anticipating an attack, surely, but taking an odd defensive stance, for doing so. and he continues, sharply: ]
You can do this, Miss Schnee, but a real enemy would not hesitate. Pinpoint weaknesses and dismantle them before your energy evaporates, Weiss -- show me what you saw.
[ The ground is not comfortable at all, but Weiss stays there for a few good seconds as Ozpin speaks. He's commanding, but in a good way. Weiss would normally see this as someone being bossy—she hates being told what to do, after all, but it's said in a tone of a teacher, and that's exactly what she needs right now.
In a situation like this, it's true. Weiss would definitely be down for the count right now. He's a lot stronger and far more experienced than she is, and she's currently defenseless.
Stabbing the ground with her sword, she pushes herself up. He also has a point, that she should have acted sooner before her Aura dies down. She's taken some hits as it is, and she has no idea what her Aura levels are right now. It's likely still a decent amount, but if she continues to linger and not get straight to the point, she won't have an opportunity to summon the Grimm she has under her belt.
After practising to summon the Armoured Grimm countless of times by now, the summoning speed has decreased by a ton. A large Glyph appears on the ground between them. Little snowflakes—the emblem of the Schnee family—dance around the outer circle while some swords rotate on the inner. It's almost like an apparition when the Grimm appears, translucent, glowing, and almost ethereal. It's kneeling in front of Weiss, but stands and turns to face Ozpin, sword at the ready. It's not as big as it originally was when Weiss fought it, but it's just a little over the former heiress' height. ]
[ the first thought that appears in his head is: that is not something team rwby has fought.
ozpin generally allows his students to do whatever they please, a firm believer in make mistakes, learn from them. but even then, ozpin keeps an eye on them, to safeguard them, to make sure they are safe (as much as they can be), and ozpin knows the emerald forest like the back of his hand. no grimm exists, like this, within his backyard -- perhaps an enemy before beacon academy, or after the fall of beacon? but weiss had said she had been taken back to atlas . . .
-- irrelevant, ozpin.
the grimm is large, but not . . . impossibly so. large enough to definitely do some damage to ozpin, if it landed a hit. the key to destroying it would definitely be to get at weiss herself, but the grimm is going to defend its master to the death, ozpin assumes, and so he stares for (maybe) a moment too long before offering half a grin, in weiss' direction.
excellent.
ozpin does not move -- instead, he holds his ground. defensive, to give weiss the opportunity to test him, to test her own bounds. he will attack, in time, but he doesn't know anything about this enemy yet -- and so he will wait, to see how it moves.
but first, ozpin inclines his head toward weiss, in the slightest of bows, though he doesn't move his eyes from the grimm, and his hand is still gripping his cane, the tip of it grazing the ground: ]
Ladies first.
[ politely and pleasant, as if a giant grimm is not ready to dismantle him and take his head off. ]
[ It certainly isn't a Grimm that Weiss has fought at Beacon. Nor in Vale. Nor in that place where they went with Professor Oobleck. It's not even a registered Grimm—one that's been sighted before. It's one that the Schnee Dust Company manufactured on their own, capturing possession type Grimm and experimenting on them.
The result is this formidable foe. The result is Weiss getting the scar on her eye.
The Glyph that summoned the Grimm disappears, making it an autonomous body whose only link to the world of the living is Weiss' soul. Ozpin is right in thinking that he will have to get to Weiss to be able to defeat the Grimm and end this battle. After all, after learning how to control her summoning, being shot at won't make the Grimm disappear just like how they do in real life.
The armour bows back at Ozpin before it rushes forward. The blade of its broadsword carves a line against the ground before it raises the sword to his head to come at Ozpin from above. ]
[ ozpin's eyes quickly flicker across the new enemy, to pinpoint a weakness -- and honestly, he sees no immediate obvious answer, outside of the fact that this creature is not real, but rather generated from weiss' own aura, her semblance, her soul. take out weiss, take out the grimm.
but first, said grimm is coming to attack him, and immediately, ozpin spins his cane to slam it directly into the ground, a shimmering green shield appearing to wrap around him in some sort of bubble, causing the grimm's sword to crash down upon it. sparks fly, but the shield holds true, and ozpin himself is unharmed -- but he isn't staying still.
instead, he spins his cane again, and focuses his aura -- lfting himself upward with the energy to slam the bubble directly into the face of the grimm, in some sort of bizarre aura-bubble uppercut.
[ The Grimm is sent a few steps back, its feet digging into the soil it's stepping on.
Weiss is honestly surprised that Ozpin can make himself levitate? That's— okay. She's trying very hard not to be so surprised, because she still has to hit him! This is her goal, after all. Eyes on the prize, Schnee!
The Grimm moves to push the bubble back, the flat of its sword being what it's using to push. Weiss is having a difficult time with this, though. While the armour is strong on its own, it seems the bubble and Ozpin's aura is much stronger. ]
Haaaaahh!
[ Feet away, Weiss screams as she puts more of her soul into the fight. The armour disappears, as if it was unsummoned, only to reappear behind and below Ozpin, where it jumps into the air and swings against the bubble. ]
[ -- that is a surprise. when the grimm disappears, ozpin's eyes widen slightly, and he immediately spins his cane to ready another assault -- but suddenly, a presence is behind him, and as he spins around, the grimm has already slammed into the bubble.
it throws him off guard, and there's a moment where ozpin (perhaps comically) windmills an arm to keep his balance, refocusing his aura shield, maintaining it -- but he soon realizes that all he is, at this moment, is a target. so ozpin drops the shield, dropping abruptly to land neatly on his feet within striking distance of the grimm -- but he doesn't remain there for long, instead launching himself forward to strike at the armored grimm -- quick jabs and hits at the armor, to test weak points, all while moving fast than the eye can properly catch. ]
[ Even Weiss moving from one point to another in seconds time didn't do much damage to the Grimm. It's a suit of armour, after all. Despite it not having a soul—an Aura, it's more formidable than a giant Nevermore or a Death Stalker.
Still, it takes its hits when Ozpin attacks again, but not long after, Ozpin will find that instead of the armour blocking with its sword, a Glyph will appear between them, and that Glyph will serve as its shield.
That is, before the Grimm hulks out and punches Ozpin out of the way with its free hand. Weiss, still with her eyes closed, cringes at all this, but remains concentrated on the fight. ]
[ the hit sends him backwards, and he nearly loses his cane in the mess -- but he quickly flips his body to land on his feet, refocusing his aura toward where he was hurt, drawing in a quick breath. but there's a pause, and a quiet laugh under his breath.
weiss got her hit, after all.
but in being hit, ozpin has answered his question, and -- completely ignoring the grimm itself -- he turns to weiss, spinning his cane quickly before darting forward, fast toward her, to break her focus, and knock her backwards with a punch of his right hand.
with any luck, he'll beat the grimm there, in his quest to knock weiss off her balance. ]
[ That was a harder hit than what Weiss was expecting, and it completely breaks through her Aura,. She's sent flying a few feet away, eventually rolling on the ground only to stop when she hits the truck of a tree. With sky blue lines emanating from her body as a sign that her Aura's depleted, the Grimm disappears, dissolving into the air.
She's going to take a while before she gets up. Please hold! ]
[ he lands neatly, after knocking weiss out of her focus, exhaling before gently dusting off his coat. his aura crackles slightly, and he frowns at the feeling, focusing the energy to begin the healing process . . . which distracts from his leg, so he resumes walking with his cane to move to weiss' side, kneeling in a relatively graceful manner to check on her. ]
Well done, Miss Schnee.
[ and he means it, genuinely! his cane retracts into the handle, to make for an easier time while he's kneeling, taking stock in her injuries. ]
[ Weiss slowly pushes herself up as soon as she feels her strength coming back to her. Aura regeneration will take a while, but it's quick to begin. ]
I'm-- I'm fine! [ She has never liked it when she looked weak in front of others, and being in front of a professor right now made her feel that kind of embarrassment tenfold. ] Thank you for asking!
[ Quickly, she pushes herself up and dusts off her skirt. Her knees are wobbly, but she manages to stand up straight. ]
[ and, just like that, ozpin rises to his feet as well, his cane ejecting once more so he can rest upon it -- and he gently takes weiss by the elbow, to keep her steady. sympathetic, perhaps. ]
It isn't very easy, to hit me. { unless you're jaune fucking arc and you take advantage of an old man WHO HAS NO AURA god fucking dammit jaune THAT PART WAS GOING TO BE A GAG TAG BUT I AM KEEPING IT ] You did very well, and that summoning . . . impressive, and rather formidable. Once you learn how to control your Aura, and learn how to spend it properly, it will be an extraordinary force to be reckoned with.
[ that definitely earns a laugh, and he allows her to use him for a bit of a support. oh, weiss. ]
I never let people hit me.
[ with some amusement, and he adjusts his cane to provide a bit of a better stable support for her to lean on. and while ozpin definitely was operating as a teaching lesson, and not necessarily as an enemy situation -- weiss did definitely hit him, and he wasn't planning on allowing that to happen. ]
You should have more confidence in your abilities, Miss Schnee. Your successes are yours; celebrate them.
[ She does have a lot of confidence in her skills - there's no doubt about that. She just didn't expect that she would be able to land a hit on the headmaster of Beacon, that's all.
She's even doing her very best to not smile right now, because she wants to jump on her bed and hug her pillow and scream. This is such a huge achievement! ]
[ mildly enough, and ozpin sort of guides her back the way they came, to begin the walk back to the team rwby house. he'll make sure she gets home safely just in case some lunatic decides to attack them YOU NEVER KNOW ]
Would you like to hear my thoughts concerning your strategy now, or later?
Your Semblance drains your Aura quickly, which means you must first dissect your opponent, in as quick a manner as possible. I tend to strike quickly, disarm quickly, before the enemy has the opportunity to drain my Aura. That does not work with every enemy, particularly ones that are difficult to hit, or ones that -- obviously -- are stronger than you are.
[ he pauses. ]
In combat, I focus my Aura in my leg, in order to move quickly without dealing with the old injury. [ welcome to chelsea's headcanon hour to explain why sometimes ozpin limps and sometimes he doesn't ] Distracting my focus in order to hit an obvious weakness is essential, when fighting someone who wants to legitimately cause you harm, and could give you an opportunity to cripple a foe quickly.
[ She listens intently as they walk, already noting down each and every word Ozpin says in her memory.
Then, when she's able to speak: ]
Using Glyphs was very tiring at first. When I was a child and when I had to learn how to use them, I would get tired very easily. Eventually, as I trained further, using it became just as easy as opening a door or even blinking.
I was never able to summon anything until... after the Fall of Beacon. I thought it was a type of Glyph that I could never master.
[ Because she's definitely mastered how to use Glyphs and Dust together. No doubt about that. ]
And I don't want to use my summoning right away in a battle. I'm capable of fighting without it, and I think I'm able to strike and disarm the enemy quickly with just my sword and Glyphs.
[ It also doesn't seem right to unleash her trump card right off the bat, you know? ]
What would sort of exercises do you think I can do to be able to strengthen my Aura? Just so when I do begin summoning a fallen foe, I'll still have a lot of it left, even if it's already mid-battle.
[ it makes sense, especially given weiss' relative inexperience with the grimm and the summoning of it. which, honestly, leads to more questions -- but he shelves them, for now, in favor of answering her question: ]
I believe you already answered your own question. [ mildly, as they walk. ] Training, practice, and paying attention to your Aura levels as you do so, will help prepare your body and your mind for combat. I learned how to conserve my Aura through countless hours [ centuries ] of practice, and training. The more you practice summoning, the less energy it will take, as you grow used to it.
[ he pauses. ]
I find that activating my semblance on my own, and strengthening it privately -- seeing how long I can manage to use it, every single day, by myself, has worked. It gives my body the opportunity to grow accustomed to the power in a relatively stress-free situation, and in addition to that, I train. The longer you devote to your craft, the more in tune with your Aura, your Semblance, your body, and your mind you will become, and the longer your Aura will last in combat.
[ that being said, he pauses -- and stops walking, gently bringing weiss to a stop as well, because they are getting close to the beacon house now, and he would rather ask the question privately. ]
Now -- if you'd indulge in answering an inquiry of my own, Miss Schnee -- provided you wish to answer it, of course. There is no requirement to do so.
[ and he turns to her, expression passive and calm, as it usually is -- but there's definitely a curiosity, in his eyes. ]
I know every Grimm that resides in my forest. [ and ozpin inclines his head, back in the direction that they came: ] That particular species isn't in my own backyard, not without my knowledge.
