Background: [ HERE ]
Personality: Ozpin presents as a stoic figurehead of one of the most powerful learning institutions in Vale, Beacon Academy. Beacon is famous (or, perhaps infamous) for allowing people from all across Vale, regardless of where they came from, for allowing the honor and dignity of participating in the academy's program of producing the best huntsman and huntresses Vale has to offer. It stands to reason, then, that Ozpin would present as someone who is proud, yet kind, with a firm hand in order to guide young men and women into the next chapter of their lives.
Unfortunately, that is probably a letdown.
Ozpin frequently presents as that guy who is fifteen minutes late to everything with Starbucks and genuinely looks unbothered to much of what is going on within the grounds of Beacon Academy. When students explode portions of his grounds or generally cause mass mayhem, Ozpin doesn't seem too bothered or annoyed, nor does he appear vehemently strict. Indeed, Ozpin frequently encourages Team RWBY into deliberately breaking the law. Whether this is some misguided faith in a group of teenagers' ability to bring down a criminal organization, or whether Ozpin has a greater plan in store for Team RWBY, we still do not know. However, the students at Beacon definitely have a healthy respect for Ozpin, albeit tainted with a healthy dose of "did he really just say that?"
Underneath the somewhat affable and ridiculous surface, though, Ozpin is a calculated Huntsman who is constantly playing the game of chess. He has a clear understanding of how the Grimm operate and focuses most of his attention on building the good in humanity -- sometimes, to a fault, as this often leads to Ozpin's fierce clinging to pacificism as the way to solve the problems that are on his doorstep. Despite this, Ozpin is willing to fight when necessary, and does so when the villain is quite literally on his stoop attempting to break in. He shows a selfless nature, when this occurs, choosing to head directly to the belly of the beast in order to combat Cinder himself, rather than allow his friends and loved ones to do it for him.
Ozpin values his students' wellbeing and safety above most things -- but, again, this also comes to a head in a series of conundrums and Bad Life Choices he has made in regards to their safety. Ozpin views his students as children, in the beginning of the series, and wants to preserve their innocence and safety from the world for as long as humanly possible. However, despite his misgivings and his devotion to protect them, Ozpin also seems to genuinely believe they are capable of great and magnificent things. This ranges from (literally) throwing them off of a cliff into a forest full of Grimm in order to test their combat strength to selecting leaders of teams that may not outwardly present as leaders (such as Ruby and Jaune). He seems to utilize a caring hand with some students (such as Blake, who requires some coaxing into believing that faunus truly are welcome at Beacon) to a mockingly lenient hand with others (such as Team RWBY in literally anything that they do).
His relationship with his students complicates, though, as the enemy advances. Ozpin is quickly running out of options, he must turn to one of his students, Pyrrha, in order to save Beacon (and, arguably, all of Vale) in order to ask her to be the next Maiden of Fall. This is clearly a difficult decision for him to make, and Ozpin is conflicted in asking Pyrrha at all, given that it might culminate in her death (and, ultimately, it did). Giving Pyrrha such a massive burden is quite obviously something Ozpin never wanted to do, but in asking her to take it, Ozpin demonstrated that, at the end of the day, the goal is the light at the end of the tunnel -- save Vale, save Remnant, and fight hte Grimm.
Ozpin is, at his core, a character that keeps things close to the vest, and has a reluctance to share the full scope of the game of chess he is playing with anybody outside of those he knows he can trust most. Most of what we know about Ozpin comes from other people's perceptions of him. His network of trusted individuals seem to be the Headmasters of the schools within Vale, his close colleagues at Beacon, and Qrow Branwen (the neighborhood alcoholic). It's an eclectic group of people, to be sure, but the majority of them support Ozpin unequivocally because they believe and trust in his mission to protect Vale at all costs from the mysterious enemy of Salem. Why, or what Ozpin did to earn that trust, we don't entirely know for sure. What we do know is that Ozpin has been steeped in this battle for an extraordinarily long time, and it shows in his tenacity to do what is right, at all costs.
Finally, Ozpin's predominating trait is his ability to trust and believe in the notion of hope. Hope, to Ozpin, is the largest weapon available in combating the Grimm and the enemies of Vale and Remnant. Without hope, they truly have nothing -- and Ozpin, in planning for the worst (and potentially the inevitable), constantly references his strong (and often immovable) belief in hope, optimism, and the will to succeed. While Ozpin has made countless mistakes throughout his life (and in the available volumes of RWBY as a canon), he still fiercely holds onto the notion that at the end of the day, the good guys are going to win. Without that belief, Remnant would absolutely crumble.
Abilities: I apologize in advance for this section, because Ozpin's powers are still somewhat vague, but I will do the best I can.
In RWBY-verse, Huntsmen and Huntresses' powers compromise of two portions: aura and semblance.
> ozpin's aura <
From the RWBY wiki: "Aura is the manifestation of one's soul in the RWBY universe, and can be used for a wide range of abilities. The specific abilities and their strengths differ from individual to individual and are dependent on a number of factors, such as experience, training, and innate skill."
Ozpin's aura is imaginably immense. He managed to hold his own against Cinder, the Fall Maiden, and deflected a great amount of her powers and abilities without too much difficulty. He is also able to create a shield out of his Aura -- a bright green "bubble," for lack of a better word, to deflect attacks. A better description can be seen in this gif: here.
> ozpin's semblance <
From the RWBY wiki: "Semblance is the manifestation of one's innate and personal power as an ability unique to each individual, with the effects varying greatly from user to user. The nature of one's Semblance is noted as representing an aspect of their character."
Ozpin's semblance is still largely unknown. But, from the RWBY wiki: "He appears capable of some form of time dilation, able to utilize his cane at inhuman speeds." It's suspected that Ozpin is capable of time dilation -- the ability to slow down and speed up time, in order to move ridiculously fast. However, that is (at this time) conjecture, and I won't be using that as his official semblance explanation should Ozpin need to fight and move extraordinarily quickly.
Finally, at the end of Volume 3, Ozpin loses his body somehow and his aura (his soul) is transported into another boy's body, named Oscar, where he spends Volume 4. As I don't know exactly how that has happened yet, I've selected an earlier canon point which is a lot more concrete. When RWBY finally tells me what Ozpin's semblance is, I will update this accordingly.
Alignment: Peromei. Hope is Ozpin's guiding force in everything he does, ranging from inspiring his students to combating the active evil that is Salem. The evil force of Grimm is spread with despair and fear and rage, and Ozpin Hope (and love) are the biggest weapons against combating the Grimm, and Ozpin utilizes the guiding force of hope, and refusal to accept that hope is gone, in order to make every decision that he makes. He doesn't frequently fall to despair, but -- well, you know. He is human.
Other: Ozpin's background and origin is still unfolding on RWBY, and while I believe I have more than enough to play him, I purposefully selected this canon point to avoid any retconning in the future. If anything outrageous comes up in future volumes of RWBY, I will absolutely contact the mod team ASAP to let them know his powers/background/etc has changed in some respect.
Additionally, Ozpin will have his cane. He uses it to fight and also to walk with. As far as I know, it's just a cane.
General Sample:
[ ozpin's arrival to the city is catastrphoic at worst, and untimely at best. for all intents and purposes, he should not be here. and for all he knows, his absence from beacon, right now, at this pivotal moment -- is going to have disasterous consequences. he has likely gotten not only pyrrha nikos killed, but multiple others, and the school is about to fall. and if beacon falls, then it sends a catastrophic ripple effect across the four kingdoms. the burden is fairly massive.
none of this presents on his face, though, as ozpin turns on the communicator. he appears tired, but present -- a man with white hair, spectacles, dressed in green, who looks curious, and a faint smile on his lips. ]
Hello.
[ pleasantly enough ]
I am in the need of several things, and I am certain the people of this city could help me with at least a few of them . . . One, a nudge in the correct direction toward anyone from Remnant, or Vale. Two, a cursory explanation as to why the city has seen fit to rain diamonds. And three, why do the grapes taste like chocolate?
[ there's a slight chance, and a tilt of the communicator to his side, to show a bunch of people scrambling across the ground to collect diamonds (false or otherwise) -- ozpin, himself, is rather removed from it, but he has found himself at another store with -- indeed -- blue grapes that taste like chocolate.
he offers a faint smile, eyes bright. ]
Any information is much appreciated.
Emotion Sample:
[ he is dead. -- potentially, anyway. at the very least, ozpin's situation is radically different, after facing down cinder. and just when he was at the peak of battle -- he was brought here. wherever here was.
it's disorientating, to say the least, but some things must come to pass. and as he wanders down the street to try and observe his surroundings, to remain calm. analyze, observe, calculate, and figure out the best solution in order to get back to where he needs to be, which is the battlegrounds.
it's at this moment that it begins to rain diamonds.
the first two or three manage to hit him (which hurt), but ozpin quickly and instinctively activates his aura with a tap of his cane to the ground. surrounded by a green bubble, the diamonds sort of bounce harmlessly off -- and suddenly, ozpin does exude a certain sense of hope, of calm, of quiet. hope, really, because if he is capable of doing this, then he's certainly capable of --
-- but it's in activating his aura that he realizes he's caused something of a scene. and with a pause, people are staring, before suddenly deciding to launch themselves to the ground to scramble for the diamonds in a messy confrontation of money and fake gems.
ozpin arches his eyebrows, slowly, before letting his bubble disappear as quickly as it formed, now that the rain has stopped, to observe the messy scrambling in front of him -- taking a careful step backward, distracted by the sudden mayhem -- but soon, ozpin regains his focus and turns his attention away from the people attempting to sell the diamonds, to focus on the buildings around him.
he has to figure out how to get out of here. ]
